Hi everyone. We’re a family of 5 from Brisbane, Australia. We’re a busy household of Brad, Jess, Zoe (17 years), Zac (14 years), Axl (4 years) and soon to be, our baby Cane Corso! We’re so excited to be writing for Fenrir! We can’t wait to share our family’s journey of owning a Cane Corso with you and in doing so, hopefully help support you in your journey of owning your own pup.
For more on our story, please stay tuned each month and watch out for the launch of our YouTube Channel. For more about why we chose a Corso, keep on reading below.
Our journey to getting a Corso has been a long one! Beginning in 2012 we were on the search for a new pup to add to our family. Online, we came across a beautiful Italian Mastiff, the Cane Corso. We immediately loved the look; athletic, strong, elegant and beautiful, a combination that is hard to come by!
Our search brought us to Itacor Cane Corso who had a female for sale named Nera “Guardian Angel”. Unfortunately she was already sold and we would not have been able to afford to maintain such a large breed at this time in our lives either.
We went on to buy a medium, mixed breed dog who we named Storm and loved for 6 years before she passed due to ongoing health issues. Storm was everything our family needed at the time and was a great transition for us going from a smaller breed, to something larger. It took us 2 years to heal from her passing. In 2020 we missed Storm and craved adding another furry friend to our family. And so the search began!
We originally were looking for a Boston Terrier as they are small, friendly and have outgoing personalities which would easily fit into our lifestyle. On our search, we came across the Corso again on Jason Corey’s YouTube Channel (with beautiful Bruce Wayne) which then led us to see cute little Mabel with Will and Rachel at Fenrir. Our interest in the breed was sparked again so we began tirelessly researching their requirements to see if we would be able to meet the Corso’s needs within our lifestyle.
As a large guardian breed, we learnt from Fenrir and Jason that a Corso would need a great deal of manners, socialisation and obedience to make sure it was the perfect companion. We saw how much effort Jason had put into Bruce Wayne and the result that came from this and started to look into our own lifestyle to ensure we could take care of this magnificent breed.
We learnt that when well socialised and trained, Corso’s can be great with children (which was our number one priority when adding a pup to our family)! Their exercise requirements were not huge and would fit well with our family activity levels. We looked into how much they would eat, and if we could afford to support their medical, dietary and other costs. We talked about the time commitment we would need to give to training such a large, intelligent breed, and how consistent our family should be with the pup.
We searched breeders and Itacor popped up again AND… they had a litter on the way! We watched Facebook updates and eventually saw a photo of the mother where her expression reminded us of our beloved Storm.
After numerous chats with Itacor, we felt (and thought) this was the right breeder and pup for us. When pups were born, we eagerly put down a deposit on a female pup and so began our journey with our Cane Corso.
