Trainability: When it comes to trainability, let’s be honest, this breed can be a real challenge. They do adore their people, and they like to make them happy. But the Bulldog is also more on the stubborn side, and they can be a bit lazy- which makes them touch to motivate.  Nonetheless, once engaged and you figure out how to hit the “on-switch” on your English Bulldog, they can do a great many things. English Bulldogs can participate in many canine sporting events like obedience, Rally, Agility, field trials, tracking trails, and scent work and make excellent therapy dogs.  How to get involved in canine sporting events: Just a quick side note here- if canine sports sounds like something you would be interested in doing with your current or future English Bulldog, the best way to get involved in canine events is just to do a simple Google search for a club that specializes in the sport you would like to do in your area. Then reach out to them and see if you can go to attend a meeting, which can also be an excellent opportunity to socialize your dog or puppy. Tips for training an EBD: The best way to try and combat this is with consistency. If you get an English Bulldog at a young age- being very precise and consistent can take you a long way with this breed and definitely makes things easier. If you are always consistent, then this sets the dog up to know what to expect, and little by little, they will begin to understand that when you ask something of them, they need to do it- even if a nap might sound more appealing at the moment.  Excellent leadership skills are also a big one with this breed. Even though they are generally friendly towards people’s aggression towards other dogs, and can be same-sex intolerant. You want to make absolutely sure that your Bulldog will always look to you for direction rather than possibly making a wrong decision on their own. This also helps in training situations as well as it helps the dog engage with you.  Frustration does not go over well with this breed. It can be the bane of all of your training efforts and can get you caught in a loop of stubbornness, which isn’t very productive. If you feel yourself starting to get frustrated, leave the training session for a moment, and come back with a level head.  Lastly, these breeds can sometimes need extra motivation. Make the training fun. If it is entertaining, then, of course, they will want to participate. It also helps to find the proper motivation. Is there a treat they really like? Or a toy they particularly fancy? If so, learning how to use and apply that -whatever it is can help you go a long way.
