With Dogs they live with:
Goldens are gentle, loving, and intelligent dogs that were originally bred as hunting dogs. And even as most hunting dogs have serious prey-drives, the Golden finds itself outside of the norm and has a pretty sunny disposition with everyone. The Golden is outgoing and playful, so it tends to do well with other home dogs. However, an older dog or breed with less energy might not appreciate the Golden's spunk- especially when they are young.
With Dogs they don't live with:
Goldens do just as well with dogs they don't know. But, it should never be assumed that every dog will want to play with a Golden, or that the Golden will want to play with every dog. So, even though this breed is off to a great start thanks to their temperament, they will still benefit significantly from socialization. This will help them to understand cues from other dogs better when they are done playing or want to be left alone. It also helped the Golden learn how to communicate this as well without getting over-reactive.
With small animals:
With small animals, Goldens can be incredible. They just have such a natural gentleness and nicety to them. Plus, they are very easy to train. The biggest issue they frequently have with small animals is trying to play with them. In particular, when it is a young Golden with too much energy. Socialization can really help here and some guidance from their canine leader to give them good direction on what is acceptable and what isn't.
With their Children:
You probably could have guessed it by now, but the Golden is also a fantastic breed for children. Both younger and older children tend to get on with this large gentle dog with a golden heart. However, younger children should always be taught how to properly treat dogs as even a Golden can get irritated and have enough. With older children who treat them properly, they will be lifelong friends, confidants, and playmates.
With other children:
The Golden can also do well with children that don't live with them. Socialization is critical, especially if they don't have the constant exposure of children in their home to set them up for success and know what to expect.
